API dashboards love totals. A partner that retries aggressively can look like your most valuable client while contributing little successful work. Before you change pricing or capacity, separate accepted work from retry storms.
Start with status families and idempotency keys where they exist. Group bursts that share a correlation trail. Treat health checks and synthetic probes as a named class—not as product traffic.
Next, map volume to product outcomes. An endpoint that spikes during checkout completion deserves different attention than one that spikes during a misconfigured sync loop.
Finally, write the definition of “usage” into your scorecards. Teams that skip this step argue about charts forever and never agree on whether a route is healthy.
